Man behind Anwar sodomy report seen posing with Cabinet ministers

SHAH ALAM: PKR has released four sets of pictures showing the man who made a police report alleging sodomy by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The pictures were taken at the office of the Deputy Prime Minister and the accuser was posing with three Cabinet ministers.

One of the pictures showed Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan, 23, posing with Khairil Anas Yusof, an aide at the Deputy Prime Minister's office.

“I have a picture actually showing the link to the Deputy Prime Minister,” PKR president Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail told a packed press conference after the PKR supreme council meeting.

“The young man who lodged the police report (against Anwar) was in the Deputy Prime Minister's office. I think that is explanatory.

“Next to the young man is the Deputy Prime Minister's special officer Khairil Anas Yusof,” she said.

Mohd Saiful, a student leader at a local university and Anwar's special assistant during the March general election, made a police report that he was sodomised by Anwar last Thursday.

Asked if she was implying that Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak was behind the allegation, Dr Wan Azizah said it was just speculation.

“I mean, the picture is (was taken) at the Deputy Prime Minister's office. That's it,” she said.

Asked whether the allegation was another political conspiracy against Anwar, similar to the one in 1998, she said: “Very much so. This is a second conspiracy, a political murder that has been committed against my husband. An attempted murder politically.”

On whether the allegation had any relevance to the allegation linking Najib to Mongolian Altantuya Shaariibuu's murder, she said: “You can link it because it's another diversion from the issues we are facing in our country. This is a political diversion.”

Dr Wan Azizah, however, could not tell when the pictures were taken and did not disclose who forwarded them to her handphone.

The other pictures were of Mohd Saiful posing with Agriculture and Agro-based Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed, Tourism Minister Datuk Azalina Othman and Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad.

Asked why Anwar was not present at the press conference, Dr Wan Azizah said he received a death threat a few weeks ago.

“He is in a safe place to protect him from danger. We have reason to believe that Anwar's safety is at risk. We received death threats. We were given the advice to take care of Anwar's life,” she said.

On whether Anwar would lodge a police report on the death threats, she said they would discuss the matter with the lawyers.

“We have to protect ourselves at the moment. A lot of Malaysians seek his leadership. Therefore, we have to protect him not only because he is my husband but also because he's the leader of our country,” Wan Azizah said.

When contacted, Shahrir declined to comment on the pictures, saying that he had taken many photos with many people.

Malaysia win doubles title in Indon badminton meet

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia have finally nailed the Indonesian Open men’s doubles title that had eluded them for 18 years with Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif-Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari rising to the occasion to win it yesterday.

And even stomach cramps to Fairuzizuan did not deter the Malaysian duo, who were seeded eighth, from giving their best to beat 2000 Sydney Olympics gold medallists Tony Gunawan-Candra Wijaya 19-21, 21-18, 21-14 in a 53-minute final at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta yesterday.

With the win over the American-Indonesian combination yesterday, Zakry-Fairuzizuan are the only second Malaysian pair after Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong to win back-to-back international Open titles.

Simply the best: Zakry and Fairuzizuan celebrating after they beat Tony Gunawan-Candra Wijaya to win the Indonesia Open.

They were the champions at the Singapore Open last week.

Fairuzizuan almost gave up after suffering from stomach cramp when they were leading 17-14 in the opening game.

“We went on the attack from the start. It was very close as we exchanged the lead several times until we took the lead. Then, I felt the pain in my stomach after going for several smashes,” said Fairuzizuan in a telephone interview from Jakarta yesterday.

“I felt like fainting due to the sharp pain. I hung on but we lost the game. We are playing in the final and we did not want to give up. I was determined to stay focussed and with strong support from Zakry, we bounced back strongly to score this memorable win.

“We believe in each other’s ability and I think, the trust was the key to our success.”

Zakry said that it was proud moment for them to be the first Malaysian men’s doubles champions in an Open tournament of a country known for their prowess in the game.

“Our target this year was to win one title and we have now done better with two. We are feeling very confident of ourselves now, especially after having beaten an experienced pair like Tony and Candra,” he said.

It is the second win in three meetings for Zakry-Fairuzizuan over the vastly experienced pair. Their other win was also achieved in the Indonesian Open, in the semi-finals last year.

“We wished that we had struck such good form earlier when we were fighting for a place in the Beijing Olympics. But we will continue to work hard and be recognised as a pair who can perform consistently well in tournaments,” said Zakry.

Zakry-Fairuzizuan are down to play in the Thailand Open, which start on Wednesday. But they are waiting for the green light from doubles chief coach Rexy Mainaky to opt out of the tournament.

Alang-Alang Menyeluk Pekasam.....

There is a good idiom in Malay “Alang-alang menyeluk pekasam, biar sampai ke pangkal lengan”.....

Since you all “people-friendly” politicians took a bicycle ride to the parliament today, you should then just ride the bicycle everywhere. Sell your cars and give it to the poor and needy. Extreme? Well, you started it, not the current government.

PKR MPs cycle to Parliament as mark of protest

By LISA GOH

KUALA LUMPUR: Four Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) MPs - Tian Chua (Batu), Hee Loy Sian (PJ Selatan), N. Gobalakrishnan (Padang Serai) and Zulkifli Nordin (Kulim Bandar Baru) - cycled to Parliament Monday as a mark of protest against the recent fuel hike.

Tian Chua said move was also to "appeal to the Cabinet Ministers to understand the difficulty in using bicycles or public transport" in the country. "Changing of lifestyles is not as easy as what the Government claims," he told reporters.

He said that he and the three others had taken about 20 minutes to cycle from Bank Negara to the Dewan Rakyat.

"It's a difficult task because the road transport system here is not designed for bicycle use and cyclists will face problems cruising around town," he said.

Asked if they would cycle to Parliament again, he said the MPs would discuss it further.

"Today, because of the debate on petrol price hike, we rode our bicycles here to make a point," he said.

YAB Guan Eng, Stop The Stupid Politiking!

I still can’t understand why politicians (especially the oppositions!) still talk about using PETRONAS’ profit. I would have thought Tan Sri Hassan Marican has gone through all the points relating to this. To me, it is the opposition who is trying to pull a political stunt.

Parliament: DAP's conditions for supporting price hike motion

By TEH ENG HOCK

KUALA LUMPUR: DAP would have considered supporting the motion on price hikes tabled by Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Samad if the Government agreed to giving out cash aid to lower and middle income families.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said they had suggested that families earning under RM6,000 a month receive RM6,000 per year.

“We can afford this. It will cost us a maximum of RM35bil a year, which is less than half of Petronas’ annual gross profit of RM80bil," he said at the Parliament lobby.

Lim called the motion a political gimmick and said the Government was not sincere in resolving problems faced by the people.

“If you say you have to increase the price of petrol because of a hike in international oil prices, fair enough. “But at the same time you must alleviate the financial burden faced by the people by distributing money earned by Petronas. When oil prices rise, everyone suffers except Petronas,” he said.

He added that the Government should follow the example of Singapore and Thailand, which distributed money to the people although they are oil importers.

Cycling: Azizul stuns Olympic champs, trio win gold in team sprint

By LIM TEIK HUAT

KUALA LUMPUR: Double Asian champion Azizul Hasni Awang kick-started his Olympic aspirations with a stunning victory over the fancied Australian cyclists in the Revolution 3 Track Series at Vodafone Arena in Melbourne on Friday.

The 19-year-old beat Australia's 2004 Athens Olympic double gold medallist Ryan Bayley, two-time Olympic medallist Shane Kelly and former world junior champion Mark French en route to bagging the keirin title.

Fellow Malaysian Mohd Edrus Yunus completed the list of five riders to qualify for the final and joined Azizul to go in front of the Aussies after the derny (pace motor) moved out.

But it was Azizul who charged home on the last lap to win the race in 10.51, leaving Kelly and French to finish second and third respectively.

It was a day of double delight when the trio of Azizul, Josiah Ng and Rizal Tisin went on to beat the Australia's Daniel Ellis, French and Bayley in the team sprint final.

http://thestar.com.my/archives/2008/6/15/sports/s_pg54azizul.jpgPocket rocket: Azizul Hasni Awang beat Australia's Olympic gold medallists Ryan Bayley, Shane Kelly and former world junior champion Mark French to win the keirin title.

The Malaysians stormed home to win the shoot-out for gold in 45.559. The Australian trio stopped the clock at 45.588.

Their effort is also just outside the national record of 45.511 set by Edrus, Josiah and Rizal in the World Cup in Beijing last November.

Azizul finished third in the 200m sprint race, which was won by Bayley.

And the morale boosting wins over the Australians, ranked second in the world track rankings, surely left Azizul pleased with the performances as he looked towards a debut Olympic appearance in Beijing.

“It’s not a bad time for the team sprint, as we did it on a cold track.

“It’s a good start to our campaign heading towards the Olympics. We beat the Australians for the first time in the team sprint and this will be the same line-up for Beijing,” said Azizul in a telephone interview from Melbourne.

The Malaysian cyclists will leave for Germany next week for another race and they will set up base in Spain after that.

The training stint in Spain will be where the Malaysian cyclists fine-tune their preparations under Australian coach John Beasley before they leave for Beijing.

The Malaysian team are unable to train in Melbourne due to the coming winter.

KJ - Not You Too (Being an Idiot)

Mr. KJ,

For an intellectual like you, to be saying this is truly a disappointment for all the Oxford scholars.

Are you stupid or a moron? Have you checked with PETRONAS on their approach in the last few years of its operations?

Look, it’s quite simple. For the last few years, PETRONAS has ventured abroad because we all know as of now we only have 25 years or so of oil reserves. If this is remains, what would the country earn after we have exhausted our oil? The 35% revenue the government get from PETRONAS won’t be as high because PETRONAS’ earning will fall. So PETRONAS has gone abroad, e.g. Sudan, Kazakhstan and also that 40% share of the LPG Project in Australia.

Going abroad for business is not easy and not cheap. You need to get your people there and there are a lot of due diligence works to be done. All this use the profits that PETRONAS has. And bear in mind, PETRONAS is also actively looking for more deepwater oil wells. This is certainly not a cheap exercise.

Therefore, YB for Rembau, please exercise more of your brain cells before opening your mouth.

Khairy: Let Petronas’ accounts be made public

KOTA KINABALU: Umno Youth deputy chief Khairy Jamaluddin has joined the chorus of calls for Petronas' accounts to be made public.

Khairy, who is the Rembau MP, felt that the move was necessary as people continued to question why the national oil corporation was unable to absorb the rising cost of fuel with its profits.

“I will bring it up in Parliament and will ask the Government to make it public,” he told reporters after presenting a RM5,000 donation to the Seri Mengasih school for the intellectually-handicapped here on behalf of Sabah Umno Youth.

He said although the Government had provided various incentives to cushion the hike, Sabahans and others still asked why as an oil-producing country, Malaysia was not able to absorb the rising fuel cost.

“We as Barisan Nasional backbenchers are finding it hard to explain to the people. It is better to make the accounts public,” said Khairy, who is on a two-day visit to the state.

He expressed confidence that Petronas would be able to give a full account of its operations.

Abdullah: Terengganu to manage the 5% oil royalty once again

By R.S.N. MURALI

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Federal Government has agreed to revert the management of the five per cent oil royalty back to the state government.

The payment of oil royalty to the state stopped in 2000 when the opposition took control of the Terengganu.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi made the much-awaited announcement yesterday after a closed-door meeting with state Umno leaders and high-ranking Government officers at a hotel here yesterday.

“The handing over of the royalty will be done once a detailed summary on the matter, including the procedures of how the royalty should be channelled to the state’s coffer, is done.

“The Federal Government agreed today to return the royalty payment but we have to outline the procedures, measures and other particulars,” he said.

The issue of oil royalty came up when Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said recently asked the Federal Government to hand over the management back to Terengganu in a bid to implement more people-oriented projects.

Terengganu received the oil royalty in the form of Wang Ehsan (Compassionate Fund) from 2000 at a lower quantum than the five per cent or estimated RM1bil, annually.

“I trust that the state government will spend the fund wisely especially reserving enough for future contingencies.

“We must be far-sighted and manage the royalty, and not exhaust the fund for unnecessary projects,” said Abdullah.

Ahmad Said, who was standing beside the Prime Minister, was beaming when the announcement was made at 3.01pm.

The Prime Minister also announcing that Ahmad Said would be the new state Umno liaison committee chairman replacing former Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh, who resigned from the post on May 28.
